The new 91��Ƭ Patriot made his physical debut Sept. 16 during the college’s annual Constitution Day event. A digital version of the Patriot, designed in-house by 91��Ƭ, complements the physical mascot and will help bring the Patriot to life across the college’s communications and events.

More than a sports mascot, the 91��Ƭ Patriot embodies the entire student body — celebrating students across academics, extracurricular activities and athletics. It joins the ranks of other great mascots that represent 91��Ƭ’s university transfer partners: the UF Gator, the U91��Ƭ Knight, the USF Bull and the FAMU Rattler.

“The Patriot represents what we want every 91��Ƭ student to experience: a place where they are encouraged to discover their potential, persevere through challenges and pursue excellence,” said Dr. Mary Ann Begley, 91��Ƭ vice president of enrollment services and student affairs. “This new mascot gives our students a recognizable symbol of the pride, belonging and possibility that define the 91��Ƭ experience.”

The mascot’s return is part of 91��Ƭ’s celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

“We are proud to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary with a newly refreshed mascot that showcases the patriotism exhibited by all of our students,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, 91��Ƭ president. “Every 91��Ƭ student, employee and alumnus can claim the honor of being a 91��Ƭ Patriot. It is my hope that the refreshed Patriot design will strengthen that connection between the college and the people that make 91��Ƭ such a great place to learn and thrive.”

Students will have multiple opportunities to connect with the new Patriot throughout the semester, including the Take the Reins launch party at the Ocala Campus on Sept. 22 and “Meet the Mascot” events at the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus on Sept. 23 and Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus on Sept. 30.

The new Patriot is ready to cheer on every 91��Ƭ student from their first day through graduation and beyond — representing the spirit, ambition and sense of community that unite the college’s Patriots.

After construction is completed, the new center will house up to five Law Enforcement Academies and four Corrections Academies, approximately 180 students, on an annual basis. In addition, the complex will provide training in advanced/specialized courses to more than 600 law enforcement professionals from 14 agencies within region six (Marion, Citrus, Levy, Hernando and Sumter Counties) annually.

“The new Criminal Justice Institute represents a significant investment in the future of public safety across our region,” said Dr. Jennifer Fryns, 91��Ƭ vice president of Workforce Development and Innovation. “By increasing our capacity to prepare law enforcement and corrections professionals and providing specialized training for those already serving our communities, 91��Ƭ is helping meet the workforce needs of our public safety partners while creating opportunities for students to build rewarding careers.”

The $19.4 million, 31,201-square-foot complex is funded by the state legislature and local funding. Comprised of an academic and training building on one side and a simulation and defensive tactics building on the other, with a covered “Main Street” connecting the two, the new institute will eliminate the disconnect between classroom theory and street reality, giving real-world training in a safe environment.

The first building, for academic and training, will feature 10 large classrooms, a 730 SF F.A.T.S. simulator room for firearms and scenario-based simulation training, and an exercise/fitness room supporting physical conditioning and training activities.

The second building, for simulation and defensive tactics training, will contain a variety of staged environments for realistic scenario-based training exercises, including a mock restaurant with a fully functional kitchen and break area, a mock booking and intake area for law enforcement processing, and a mock bank and hotel front desk. The building will also contain a 2,600-square-foot defensive tactics training area with padded flooring and three white box training rooms for additional scenario-based training.

The Main Street area between the two buildings will provide a covered area for reality-based scenario training, with integrated observation decks that will allow instructors and trainees to safely observe ongoing training exercises.

“Britain’s Loyal Colonies Lost: The American Revolution in Florida” will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Stearns Learning Resources Center on the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. This free event is open to community members.

Head’s lecture will examine the conflict and the role Florida played during the American Revolution. While 13 of Britain’s American colonies declared independence in 1776, East and West Florida remained loyal to King George III. The colonies soon became caught between American and Spanish forces as the war spread into the region.

Head is a senior lecturer of history at the University of Central Florida. A native of Western New York, he earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Buffalo and has published five books, including “A Crisis of Peace: George Washington, the Newburgh Conspiracy, and the Fate of the American Revolution,” a finalist for the 2020 George Washington Book Prize.

His most recent book, “A Republic of Scoundrels: The Schemers, Intriguers, and Adventurers Who Created a New American Nation,” explores the people and intrigue surrounding the creation of the United States. Head also writes regularly for public audiences on topics ranging from the Golden Age of Piracy in Florida to George Washington’s love advice.

“The annual speaker series brings distinguished Americans to the 91��Ƭ Ocala Campus, providing an opportunity for both the college community and citizens from Marion County and the surrounding areas to learn from and meet these individuals,” said Cliff Stearns, who established the Friends of Cliff Stearns Endowed Chair through a gift to the 91��Ƭ Foundation in December 2020. The series aims to bring national and regional speakers on history, political science and technology to 91��Ƭ to benefit both students and the community.

The Connection Hub is available for students and employers to use as a meeting room and features a set of virtual reality headsets to aid students in career exploration.

Expanding critical workforce programs was a top priority for 91��Ƭ in the 25-26 legislative budget funding cycle. 91��Ƭ is in the largest workforce program expansion in its history, and this extra funding allows the college to support the need for skilled workers in key industries.

The $1 million in funding is already being put to use hiring qualified faculty and staff for Nursing, Agribusiness, IT and other in-demand programs. 91��Ƭ is also utilizing the funds to expand existing workforce programs and launch new degrees, such as the Associate in Science in Precision Agriculture, Associate in Science in Hospitality Management and Tourism, Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Student Education and College Credit Certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

91��Ƭ’s Marketing and Public Relations team submitted for their marketing campaign “Take the Reins: Quality Enhancement Plan.” At the gala, 91��Ƭ earned a Judges’ Award (presented to entries that demonstrate impressive return on investment), a Golden Image Award (presented to the top-scoring entry in the Integrated Marketing category), and the Dick Pope All Florida Golden Image Award (the highest honor, given to the overall best PR program across the state).

Inaccuracies with student records are still being corrected; we thank you for patience as we work diligently to fix the issues in the system so that we can disburse the correct amount of aid for all students.

Financial Aid

We are working to correct inaccuracies found in student records in order to properly disburse aid. Expert software technicians are on campus and online with our team every day, and we have had great progress in updating these records and have taken positive steps toward resolution.

The Financial Aid department has started the process of disbursing some funds to students, dependent on a variety of factors such as source of funding. Because aid is coming from multiple sources (like federal, state, and local grants or loans), aid is being released in separate, staggered batches rather than all at once, and there is still no definite timeline for full disbursement.

We appreciate your patience and will notify you via Patriots Mail when your funds are disbursed, including information regarding whether your aid package has been completely disbursed or is still pending other funding sources.

Please know that the 91��Ƭ Patriot Fund application is available to any student having emergency financial need. It is located on the Help tab and the Student Accounts tab on the My91��Ƭ Portal.

Summer B students eligible for financial aid can pick up their school supply kits at the Ocala Campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The temporary station will be located outside Building 36 on July 9, and inside Building 1, room 102 or 107, from July 13–16. All other students can either choose to wait until 91��Ƭ’s new bookstore, BibliU, opens on July 27 or purchase supplies from other retailers. Scantrons needed for exams will be provided by your instructor.

Billing

The College of Central Florida is working diligently to update the data in order to finalize billing as soon as possible.

Summer B students can expect their billing information to be updated within the next week. Please keep an eye on your Patriots Mail for the most up-to-date information. Fall semester students will be notified when billing has opened, and payment plans for this semester have been extended. Students now have until July 20 (extended from July 9) to secure the initial down payment option for their payment plans.

The College of Central Florida is working hard to integrate a newly installed student information software system. Despite our best efforts, financial aid disbursements have been delayed by a series of technical setbacks related to the integration of the new system.
What is the cause of the issues?
After launching 91��Ƭ’s new technology system, we have identified some inaccuracies in student records. In order to legally disburse financial aid, we must first correct and verify these student records, which are used to determine financial aid offers.
What is 91��Ƭ doing about it?
We are addressing these technical issues with great urgency and are in the process of manually verifying all affected student records to ensure aid offers are correct before disbursement. Because of the complexity of the process, exact payment dates are not available at this time and estimated financial aid on student’s Financial Aid Dashboard may not be accurate. We are working to ensure all students receive the funds they are eligible for. We understand the impact this has on our students and have reallocated staff and contracted additional outside technical support to complete the distribution as soon as possible.

Financial aid for the Spring semester is currently being disbursed, and 90% of funds have already been sent to students. Please continue to be patient as we complete the remaining spring disbursements in the coming weeks. Students can check the status of their aid in the Financial Aid tab of the My91��Ƭ Portal. Because of planned system updates, some students are experiencing an unexpected delay in receiving student aid funds from loans, scholarships and grants. We regret the disruption our system transition has caused and are committed to ensuring students receive 100% of the federal financial aid they qualified for. Our team is working hard to resolve this issue and we expect all eligible financial aid to be disbursed by mid-April. Please rest assured this delay will not impact your enrollment in courses. For information about student resources including emergency funds, the Patriot Pantry, and the Patriot Closet, please visit the Help tab in your My91��Ƭ Student Portal.

The College of Central Florida’s system upgrade begins today and will continue through to March 1. Services will have alternate processes during this time.

Monday, Jan. 12, 2026

The College of Central Florida is in the process of planned system upgrades, and almost all services will have alternative processes during Feb. 5 – March 1. These upgrades will support better online services, simplified processes and improved access to academic and financial information. Services will resume March 2.
