Ira Holmes International Film Series Returns at 91制片

Films from across the globe that center around themes of humor and perseverance will take center stage in this year鈥檚 Ira Holmes International Film Series at the College of Central Florida. A full season of in-person film events kicks off Sept. 13.

鈥淎s the late, great Charlie Chaplin proclaimed, 鈥楢 day without laughter is a day wasted,鈥欌 said series founder and 91制片 Professor Ira Holmes. 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to announce that we鈥檙e back after two seasons of stream-from-home films, drive-in screenings and virtual film talks. We made it work during a difficult time for our community and our supporters. Now we鈥檙e ready to resume seeing movies together in an auditorium with the ability to share our thoughts and feelings. Laughter is therapy, and smiles are also acceptable! In the spirit of the much-loved film classic 鈥楽ingin鈥 in the Rain,鈥 we鈥檙e ready to 鈥榤ake 鈥檈m laugh.鈥欌

This year鈥檚 first film will be 鈥淲ild Men,鈥 with screenings on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., at the Appleton Museum, and at 7 p.m., at the 91制片 Ocala Campus. In this 2021 Danish film, Martin sets off into the forest in a misguided attempt to overcome his midlife crisis 鈥 armed with only a bow and some animal skins. A chance meeting with a fugitive leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners and his family close behind. Martin鈥檚 quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.

“Hamilton” Talk Kicks Off 91制片 Stearns Speaker Series

Fans of the 鈥淗amilton鈥 musical won鈥檛 want to miss the inaugural event in the College of Central Florida鈥檚 Stearns Speaker Series. Robert Watson, Ph.D., will present 鈥淎lexander Hamilton: Man, Myth, Musical鈥 on Monday, Sept. 19, at 12:30 p.m. at the Dassance Fine Arts Center on the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The lecture will be followed by a reception at 2 p.m. in the college鈥檚 Clifford B. Stearns Learning Resources Center.

Dr. Watson is a distinguished professor of American history and an Avron Fogelman research professor at Lynn University. He鈥檒l share the intriguing backstory of Hamilton鈥檚 Jewish roots and hardscrabble upbringing as well as a fun fact-check of the musical and a closer look at the history behind some of the show鈥檚 iconic scenes.

鈥淭he speaker series will provide an opportunity for the college community and citizens in Marion and the surrounding counties to meet and hear from distinguished Americans,鈥 said Cliff Stearns, who established the Friends of Cliff Stearns Endowed Chair through a gift to the 91制片 Foundation in December 2020. The series aims to bring national and regional speakers on history, political science and technology to the 91制片 campus to benefit both students and the community.

Friday Talks Speaker Shares Rebranding Experience

The Friday Talks Business Advancement Series, a program of the Ocala Metro Chamber & Economic Partnership and the College of Central Florida, will feature Loretta Shaffer, CPM, CDME, on July 29, presenting 鈥淲hat Goes Into a Brand Revolution?鈥

Shaffer is the tourism development director for Ocala/Marion County. She will share elements of the multi-faceted process to revolutionize the Ocala/Marion County Visitors & Convention Bureau. Learn about the important of research, community input, creative development of tagline and logo, and testing to ensure that branding resonates with community members and visitors.

91制片 Honors Simpson with Citrus Campus Renaming

鈥淲ilton Simpson has been a steadfast champion for the College of Central Florida and higher education in general, and we are proud to recognize him with the renaming of the 91制片 Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus,鈥 said Dr. Jim Henningsen, 91制片 president. 鈥淗e has worked to ensure that 91制片 receives the recognition and financial support needed to grow high-demand academic programs, employ the highest quality faculty and staff, expand our facilities, and invest in needed maintenance.鈥

Simpson is a product of the Florida College System, a fifth-generation Floridian, a lifelong farmer and has served as a member of the Florida Senate since 2012. He currently represents the 10th district, which includes Citrus, Hernando and part of Pasco County.

鈥淭he College of Central Florida has been ahead of the curve in producing the workforce that is needed for tomorrow鈥檚 jobs,鈥 Simpson said. 鈥淲hether our community has needed nurses, engineers or entrepreneurs, 91制片 has been a leader. It makes it much easier for the Legislature to provide resources when we know that one plus one is equaling three or four, not just two.鈥

The Florida state budget approved by the governor on June 2 includes $13.65 million for a Health Science Technology Education Center at the Ocala Campus in addition to operational expenses for new health sciences programs slated to begin in 2023, new positions to support critical needs within the college, and maintenance repair and renovation projects, which will ensure health safety and ADA compliance. In addition, the 91制片 Foundation received $150,000 to support educational outreach at the Appleton Museum.

91制片 Webber Gallery Presents Competitive Printmaking Exhibition

鈥淭he 2022 Extreme Pressure Biennial of American Prints,鈥 an inaugural competitive national exhibition organized by the Webber Gallery of the College of Central Florida, will be on view Aug. 8-Sept. 22. Open to all forms of traditional printmaking, the exhibition will present a celebration and examination of contemporary printmaking by artists from across the United States.

Purchase awards totaling a minimum of $2,500 will be made through local organizations, with some works entering the college鈥檚 permanent collections. Five听cash prizes will be awarded based on the selections of juror Janet Ballweg. She is a professor of art and head of printmaking at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and is active in several national print alliances and councils. Ballweg鈥檚 work has been exhibited in more than 500 shows听and has won dozens of awards. Her selection for first place will receive $500, second place will receive $300, third place will receive $100, and two honorable mentions will receive $50. CAMPUS USA is听a proud partner of the College of Central Florida and has generously funded the prizes.

Awards and prizes will be presented at the opening reception on Friday, Aug. 19, 5-7 p.m.

The College of Central Florida invites anyone thinking about college to an open house on Tuesday, July 19, from 3-5 p.m., at the 91制片 Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland.

Future students are encouraged to tour the campus and learn about more than 150 academic pathways, including 70 job-training programs. Attendees can receive assistance with the application process, financial aid, placement testing, academic advising and registration for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 15.

Everyone who completes an admissions application at the event will have the $30 admissions fee waived and will be entered to win free tuition for a 3-credit-hour class at 91制片鈥檚 standard tuition rate. Levy Promise $1,000 scholarships are available to all eligible Levy County 2022 high school graduates who attend classes at the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus in 2022-2023.

Appleton Call for Entries: Mobile Photography Contest

The Appleton鈥檚 annual contest features new categories to inspire both novice and experienced mobile photographers. Submissions will be juried by Mark Anderson, a photographer and public relations specialist for Marion County. Prizes will be awarded in each category and all entries will be on view in an exhibition at the Appleton from Aug. 15-Sept. 11. This contest is open to all ages. No experience is necessary and there is no fee to enter. Participants may submit up to two photos in each category.

鈥淓ach year we鈥檙e absolutely delighted to see all of the creative, unique and fun responses to each of the categories,鈥 said Victoria Billig, Appleton Museum assistant director. 鈥淲e very much look forward to seeing this year鈥檚 entries and displaying them all in our Preview Gallery.鈥

Submitting to more than one category? Please send separate emails for each category. And remember, no more than two photos per category will be accepted.

Entries will be juried, and winning photos will be selected based on creativity, quality, responsiveness to the category and overall impact. Winners will be notified before announcements are made on social media. All entries will be printed and displayed in the museum. For ease of printing, photos will be cropped by the Appleton to square or 4 x 5 inches; no guarantees for special printing of panoramas.
