91制片 Supports Hurricane Ian Survivors

When the College of Central Florida made the decision to close before Hurricane Ian, administrators worried the storm might impact the college鈥檚 students and faculty served by campuses in Marion, Citrus and Levy counties. Two days later, when the 91制片 community saw the devastation in Southwest Florida, students, faculty and staff immediately asked, 鈥淗ow can we help?鈥

Just a few days after the storm, 91制片 staff delivered much-needed generators, gas cans and extension cords to Daytona State College, which experienced major flooding and power loss. When students, faculty and staff returned to campus, groups including the Career and Professional Employees Council quickly organized to facilitate a supply drive.

On Monday, Oct. 10, 91制片 staff loaded six pallets of water, nonperishable food, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products into a tractor-trailer headed to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. 91制片鈥檚 contributions filled up the trailer that also included donations from Florida Gateway College, Santa Fe College and Lake-Sumter State College. 91制片 and the other three colleges are all members of the Florida College System.

鈥淭his is why we鈥檙e called 鈥楾he Great 28,鈥欌 said Florida College System Chancellor Kathryn Hebda. 鈥淲e see a need and we respond.鈥

91制片 President Dr. Jim Henningsen explained that the college also collected a large amount of supplies which will be added to the Marion County collection so items can be distributed by the Marion County Sheriff鈥檚 Office to those impacted by the hurricane who still need assistance.

鈥淲e have all heard the stories of families who lost everything,鈥 Henningsen said. 鈥淭hey are our neighbors and we are working together to support them. It could have been any one of us.鈥

For more than a week, 91制片 students, faculty and staff filled campus donation boxes. On Thursday, Oct. 13, 14 91制片 student and staff volunteers sorted and packed 60 boxes of donated nonperishable food, household supplies and personal hygiene products plus pallets of water and pet food, which will now be delivered to the Marion County Sheriff鈥檚 Office for distribution.

鈥淲e鈥檙e stronger together,鈥 Henningsen said. 鈥淥ur college family supports our neighbors in need.鈥

91制片 Students Receive Model United Nations Awards

Six students from the College of Central Florida鈥檚 Model United Nations Club received Outstanding Awards at the 2022 Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference held virtually Oct. 7-8. The awards recognize the student鈥檚 ability to carry out diplomacy through participation, ability to negotiate, debate professionally and interact with other students from around the nation.

This year鈥檚 conference focused on two global issues. The UN Conference on Trade and Development simulated the topic 鈥淓nhancing the Global Response to Food Insecurity in Conflict.鈥 The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice explored the topic 鈥淐ombating Cybercrime Against Critical Infrastructure.鈥

Model UN is an international extra-curricular global engagement activity through which student delegates spend months in preparation researching foreign policies and cultures. At conferences, they develop papers, which include their ideas to solve real-life problems that plague nations.

91制片 Health Sciences Open House

Anyone interested in training for a career in health care is invited to a Health Sciences Open House at the College of Central Florida. On Tuesday, Nov. 15, 4-6 p.m., attendees can tour the Health Sciences labs, classrooms and the 91制片 Ocala Campus. Prospective students will have the chance to meet with a Health Sciences advisor, apply to the college for free and learn about financial aid.

91制片鈥檚 Health Sciences programs include Dental Assisting, Emergency Medical Services, Nursing, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiography and Surgical Services.

Visual Artists’ Society Presents ‘Best of The Season’ Exhibition

The Visual Artists鈥 Society will present the 鈥淏est of the Season鈥 exhibition at the 91制片 Webber Gallery Nov. 7-Dec. 8. This annual favorite includes a variety of styles and mediums.

New this year, VAS accepted open applications from artists across Central Florida. Artworks were selected and will be judged by Ginger Sheridan, an associate professor of art in photography at Jacksonville University. She will present awards including Best in Show, first through fourth place and honorable mentions at the opening reception on Friday, Nov. 18, 5-7 p.m.

鈥淏est of the Season鈥 is one of two annual opportunities for Visual Artists鈥 Society members to display the works that showcase their talent and imagination. The society has more than 100 members from all over Marion County and Central Florida, including professional and amateur artists and many of 91制片鈥檚 talented students. Because VAS has a varied membership, exhibits display a variety of styles and mediums, including more traditional paintings and photographs as well as jewelry, sculpture and digital media.

91制片 Patriot Project Screens ‘Latin History For Morons’

The College of Central Florida鈥檚 Patriot Project will recognize Hispanic Heritage Month with a screening of 鈥淟atin History for Morons鈥 on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Building 8, Room 110, at the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala.

In this one-man Broadway show, John Leguizamo finds humor and heartbreak as he traces 3,000 years of Latin history in an effort to help his bullied son. The performance, which earned him a 2018 Tony Award, has been called 鈥渁 genuinely brilliant piece of popular, political theater鈥 and is a must-see for students, educators and the community.

The Patriot Project lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments and event giveaways will be provided.

91制片 Speaker Remembers Rosewood 100 Years Later

January 1, 2023, will mark the 100th anniversary of the Rosewood massacre, in which at least five Black residents of the small Levy County community died. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the College of Central Florida will host Lizzie Robinson Jenkins, founder of the Real Rosewood Foundation, who will recount her family鈥檚 stories of the massacre. The community is invited to this free presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala.

Today, all that remains of Rosewood are one home and a historical marker on State Road 24, just east of Cedar Key. Last year, the John Wright house was donated to the Real Rosewood Foundation, which works to preserve the history of this community. Jenkins will share the stories of Rosewood that stayed secret for decades and explain why it is crucial to remember this event 100 years later.

The Appleton will reopen Sunday, Oct. 2. Classes and business operations will resume Monday, Oct. 3, weather permitting.

91制片 Patriot Project Lecture Focuses on Colonial Literature

The College of Central Florida鈥檚 innovative educational series focused on the American colonial period continues on Wednesday, Nov. 2, with 鈥淟iterature in the Colonial Period鈥 presented by Sandra Cooper.

Cooper, a professor of Communications at 91制片, will discuss the writing that shaped the American spirit, the American Enlightenment and our founding documents.

The Patriot Project lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments and event giveaways will be provided. Lectures will be held on Wednesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the 91制片 Webber Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala, unless otherwise indicated.

91制片 Entrepreneurship Academy Hosts Information Sessions

A limited number of students will be accepted into the College of Central Florida Entrepreneurship Academy鈥檚 inaugural cohort, which will begin classes in Spring 2023. Interested students should plan to attend one of two information sessions in October: Wednesday, Oct. 12, 5 p.m., at the Ewers Century Center, Room 107, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala, or Wednesday, Oct. 19, 12:30 p.m., at the Ewers Century Center, Room 101.

The 91制片 Entrepreneurship Academy is an innovative program developed in partnership with Chick-fil-A of Ocala that will give students a new option for training to become business community leaders. 91制片 students selected for the academy will receive two semesters of instruction in entrepreneurship-focused courses, including Principles of Management, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship Opportunities, and Small Business Management, which lead to a Business Entrepreneurship College Credit Certificate. Each course will be complemented with hands-on experiential activities organized by Chick-fil-A of Ocala leadership.
