91制片 Patriot Project Presents ‘Religion in the Colonial Period’

The College of Central Florida鈥檚 innovative educational series, 鈥淧atriot Project: Bringing History to Life,鈥 concludes on Wednesday, April 5, with 鈥淩eligion in the Colonial Period鈥 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Ewers Century Center, Room 107, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala.

Dr. Ron Cooper, 91制片 senior professor of philosophy and humanities, will discuss how European settlers to what became the American colonies hoped to leave behind Old World turmoils, many of them religious, in exchange for peace and liberty. However, those troubles followed them, and they soon produced more of their own. Add immigrants of other religions, and we get a mixed bag of patches of tolerance, areas of conflict, and a complicated history that continues to affect American culture today.

The Patriot Project lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments and event giveaways will be provided.

The Patriot Project: Bringing History to Life is a year-long lecture series developed by Dr. Sarah Satterfield, 91制片 senior professor of music and humanities, and funded by the 91制片 Foundation鈥檚 Sharon and Jerome Glassman New Initiative Grant. In accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation policy on Third Party Comments, the College of Central Florida Dental Hygiene program is soliciting comments pertaining to the standards for Dental Hygiene Education or policies and procedures used in the Commission鈥檚 accreditation process. All comments must:

  • Pertain only to the standards or policies and procedures used in the Commission鈥檚 accreditation process
  • Be signed, and signatures will be removed from comments prior to forwarding them to the program

The Commission will accept only comments pertaining to the standards or policies and procedures.

Appleton Museum Announces 2023 Summer Art Camp Schedule

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, is the place to be for ages 5 and up to have a fun, art-filled summer vacation. From drawing to painting to fashion, there鈥檚 an art camp for every young creative to enjoy.

These half-day camps are in person and appropriate for all skill levels; no experience is necessary! Registration begins April 3 at . Spaces fill quickly. 91制片 Talk Features ‘Skeptoid’ Podcast Host

College of Central Florida will host science writer Brian Dunning for two sessions of his talk titled 鈥淲e Are All Conspiracy Theorists鈥 on Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. at the 91制片 Webber Center and Wednesday, March 29, at 12:30 p.m. in Building 8, Room 110. Both locations are on the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Dunning promotes science literacy and critical thinking and is the host and producer of the 鈥淪keptoid鈥 podcast, one of the longest running and most popular independent science podcasts. He is the writer and producer of the documentary films 鈥淗ere Be Dragons,鈥 鈥淧rinciples of Curiosity鈥 and 鈥淪cience Friction.鈥 The former computer scientist hosts the science video series 鈥渋nFact with Brian Dunning鈥 and has authored seven books including 鈥淐onspiracies Declassified.鈥

Both sessions are free and open to the public, and Dunning will sign books following each presentation. This program is made possible by a grant from Bank of America.

91制片 Ira Holmes International Film Series Features ‘Tony Manero’

The College of Central Florida Ira Holmes International Film Series has been extended to include a rescheduled showing of the award-winning Chilean thriller 鈥淭ony Manero鈥 on Tuesday, March 28 (rescheduled from Oct. 11, 2022).

The 2008 film follows a middle-aged criminal who鈥檚 obsessed with impersonating John Travolta鈥檚 鈥淪aturday Night Fever鈥 character. His dancing and showbiz aspirations turn dark and lead to theft, crime and even murder set against the backdrop of Chile鈥檚 Augusto Pinochet military dictatorship. This film is unrated and contains graphic violence and adult themes.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m., at the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Building 8, Room 110, and is free and open to the public. Film may contain mature content.

Visual Artists’ Society Presents “Summer Spotlight XXVI” Exhibition

The Visual Artists鈥 Society presents Summer Spotlight XXVI, which showcases the work of local and regional artists in a wide variety of mediums. The exhibition will be on view at the College of Central Florida Webber Gallery May 15-July 20. The Webber Gallery is located at the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

鈥淭he annual Summer Spotlight has always been an important part of the Webber Gallery exhibits,鈥 said Amanda Lyon, Webber Gallery coordinator. 鈥淣ew this year, the Summer Spotlight XXVI Exhibition has accepted open applications from Central Florida artists, so we鈥檙e excited to see the diverse body of work selected by our judge, Ronald Gibbons.鈥

The Visual Artists鈥 Society is made up of professional and amateur artists and many of 91制片鈥檚 talented students. Because VAS has a varied membership, exhibits showcase a variety of styles and mediums, including more traditional paintings and photographs as well as jewelry, sculpture and digital media.

Gibbons, a full-time painter who lives in Neptune Beach, has exhibited paintings nationally and internationally. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Ohio University. Gibbons will select works for awards including Best in Show, first through fourth places and Honorable Mentions.

91制片 Vintage Farm Hosts Educational Field Day

The College of Central Florida invites the community to the Vintage Farm Campus, 4020 S.E. Third Ave., Ocala, for an Educational Field Day on Saturday, April 1, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The 103-acre working farm is the home of 91制片鈥檚 hands-on Equine and Agribusiness programs and will be open for tours and demonstrations by students, faculty and alumni.

Equine topics will include clicker training, genetics of sport horses, writing judging arguments, therapeutic modalities, bandaging, round pen work, handling and horse care.

Agribusiness demonstrations will include ongoing horticulture work plus the integration of technology in agribusiness management.

91制片 offers the only hands-on agriculture-related learning programs in the Florida College System, with certificates, associate degrees and bachelor鈥檚 degrees available in Equine Studies and Agribusiness.

College of Central Florida is partnering with FleetForce Truck Driving School to offer Commercial Driver鈥檚 License training at the 91制片 Ocala Campus. The first classes will begin March 27.

The community is invited to a kickoff event on Tuesday, March 21, 4:30-6 p.m. at the Webber Center on the 91制片 Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. Guests can tour the outdoor obstacle course.

91制片 Theatre Presents ‘Xanadu’

The stage at the College of Central Florida鈥檚 Dassance Fine Arts Center will be transformed into a roller disco when 91制片 Theatre presents 鈥淴anadu鈥 live on stage April 13-16.

The musical is based on the 1980 film, which starred Olivia Newton-John as Greek muse Clio who calls herself Kira and inspires mortal Sonny to open the world鈥檚 first roller disco in an old Southern California theatre. 91制片鈥檚 production features a cast of 28 students, including Kelli Piel as Clio/Kira and Jackson Reed as Sonny Malone, with an array of goddesses, sirens, stunt skaters and poi dancers.

The musical score includes all the hits from the film, including the Billboard No. 1 hit 鈥淢agic,鈥 originally recorded by Olivia Newton-John, and integrates two classic Electric Light Orchestra songs, 鈥淪trange Magic鈥 and 鈥淓vil Woman.鈥 91制片鈥檚 set, designed by Tyler Stentiford, features two stunt skating ramps.

鈥溾榅anadu鈥 is high-energy fun that will keep audiences laughing,鈥 said Nonalee Davis, 91制片 assistant professor of theatre and the play鈥檚 director. 鈥淧lus, the music will make you want to get up and dance! This Tony Award-nominated musical comedy, complete with roller skating, was an easy choice to celebrate Olivia Newton John鈥檚 legacy after the legendary singer passed away in August 2022.鈥

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 13-15, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the Dassance Fine Arts Center, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala.
