“Britain’s Loyal Colonies Lost: The American Revolution in Florida” will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Stearns Learning Resources Center on the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. This free event is open to community members.

Head’s lecture will examine the conflict and the role Florida played during the American Revolution. While 13 of Britain’s American colonies declared independence in 1776, East and West Florida remained loyal to King George III. The colonies soon became caught between American and Spanish forces as the war spread into the region.

Head is a senior lecturer of history at the University of Central Florida. A native of Western New York, he earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Buffalo and has published five books, including “A Crisis of Peace: George Washington, the Newburgh Conspiracy, and the Fate of the American Revolution,” a finalist for the 2020 George Washington Book Prize.

His most recent book, “A Republic of Scoundrels: The Schemers, Intriguers, and Adventurers Who Created a New American Nation,” explores the people and intrigue surrounding the creation of the United States. Head also writes regularly for public audiences on topics ranging from the Golden Age of Piracy in Florida to George Washington’s love advice.

“The annual speaker series brings distinguished Americans to the 91��Ƭ Ocala Campus, providing an opportunity for both the college community and citizens from Marion County and the surrounding areas to learn from and meet these individuals,” said Cliff Stearns, who established the Friends of Cliff Stearns Endowed Chair through a gift to the 91��Ƭ Foundation in December 2020. The series aims to bring national and regional speakers on history, political science and technology to 91��Ƭ to benefit both students and the community.

The 91��Ƭ District Board of Trustees approved the college’s annual budget on June 24, keeping tuition rates flat for all degree and certificate programs in support of the state’s priority on no tuition increases. This year’s tuition rate continues 91��Ƭ’s ranking as one of the most affordable colleges in the country.

“Three-quarters of College of Central Florida graduates leave the college with no student loan debt,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, 91��Ƭ president. “Keeping college affordable is a priority at 91��Ƭ, and our students graduate with jobs, not debt.”

91��Ƭ consistently ranks among the top 7% of colleges in the nation for affordability, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The cost for associate level courses is $112.92 per credit hour, or approximately $2,710 per year for a student with a 12-credit course load for two semesters. The cost for a bachelor’s level course is $129.27 per credit hour, or approximately $3,102.48 for a student with a 12-credit course load for two semesters.

91��Ƭ’s tuition is about half the cost of a public Florida university and only 13% of the cost of a private Florida university.

The first ceremony at 10 a.m. will recognize graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees, Associate in Science degrees, and certificates. The second ceremony at 2 p.m. will celebrate graduates receiving Associate in Arts degrees.

The $7 million project will provide expanded cardiac and medical simulation space for future EMTs and paramedics to gain hands-on experience in realistic settings that include an apartment, ambulance and emergency room.

The Appleton Museum of Art is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. The museum will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The Webber Gallery on the Ocala Campus will host “Trains at the Holidays,” open Dec. 19-31 from 10 a.m-4 p.m., with Christmas Eve hours of noon- 3 p.m. and closed Christmas Day.

This newly established endowment reflects a generous commitment from HUGS Charities to both student success and the future of compassionate cancer care and is named in memory of Mary Alice Adkison, who served as a founding member of HUGS Charities. The scholarship will provide lasting financial assistance to BSN students, helping to offset the cost of tuition and other educational expenses. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing careers in oncology nursing.
